In fact, a lot of colleges don’t ask students to take a specific GRE subject test even if it is the subject that the course covers, because some content of the GRE subject tests is regarded to be out of date. However, the GRE is still a significant factor in their decision, and it would be wise to aim for a good score.

The verbal section of the GRE is generally the section that students score less highly on. So getting a good score could distinguish yourself . A great way to improve your verbal score, is to improve your vocabulary. That is the basic thing that it is testing. However, learning new words can sometimes feel like a lucky dip. With hundreds of thousands of words to choose from in the dictionary, if you just pick words at random, the chances are they will not come up on the test. There is no guarantee about what words will come up on the test, but it is helpful to have a strategy to pursue in learning new words.

One of the best ways to learn new words usefully is to read. You are more likely to come across words you don’t know in written than spoken English. But it doesn’t really matter how you learn them. The important point is that you have come across it in a popular magazine or through someone you know, the chances are that word is common enough to be worth learning.

Also, you can judge for yourself whether you think it would be worth learning a word based on its meaning. Does it have a very specific meaning or can be used in a wide variety of contexts? Very specialized words are less likely to be of use to you.
