There are a number of phrases associated with deception. To 'pull the wool over someone's eyes' is a popular English phrase in some parts of the word. Other synonyms include to hoodwink, to dupe and to con. 'Dupe' is most commonly used when someone is being tricked into believing a specific fact - as in the phrase 'they were duped into' thinking or doing something. It can also be used on it's own as in simply, 'they were duped' When something is described as beguiling, it looks attractive or charming, but it is harmful or has a hidden motive.
Ersatz, faux, and fake all describe something that is made to look like something else, while not necessarily implying that it is deliberately intended to deceive. Faux is the least negative of these words.
Disillusionment is a word describing literally the state of having no illusions. It is often used to denote a feeling of people who once believed in a cause that was though to be worthy or give them hope, but they now regard as false.
